PS Enterprise
One of the oldest steam powered vessels afloat, the PS Enterprise was launched in Echuca in 1878 and is a working exhibit in the National Museum of Australia collection. She was built of river red gums and is powered by a 12-horsepower two-cylinder steam engine made in Yorkshire, England. The PS Enterprise has worked as a cargo vessel, floating store, fishing vessel, houseboat and showboat. She was purchased by the NMA in 1984, restored in Echuca, travelled to Canberra on a truck and relaunched in Lake Burley Griffin. The Enterprise is known as a “shallow drafter” with only 75cms below the water line and managed to steam on the rivers with very low water, towing a barge laden with wool, wheat or other general goods.
